Greetings from Kentucky!
As The HeadHunters and myself prepare to tour in support of our new Audium release
'Songs From The Grass String Ranch', Danny asked me to update everyone on The HeadHunters. Doug, Fred, Anthony, Richard & myself have been off the road since the end of 1999 recharging and spending much needed time with family. Music is one of the greatest joys in life, but you have to recharge the Spirit, Mind, & body.
First off, we're very proud of the new CD. The bulk of the sessions took place in 1998,
with a few tracks going back as far as 1996. David Barrick at Barrick Recording did a wonderful job tracking, and Rodney Mills in Atlanta mixing. Since Rodney has worked with Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Atlanta Rhythm Section, we're honored having him on board for the first time. I think we were able to get the guitars louder in the mix this time around, he came up with some great sounds. The singing, playing and writing also show a maturity on 'Songs From The Grass String Ranch', we've grown as a band.
Speaking of guitars, one of my favorite subjects! For the biggest part of the sessions, I
tracked with my sunburst 1958 Les Paul Standard that acquired from Hank Williams Jr. in 1991. This guitar used to belong to Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd, which makes it even more special to me. Ed and I have become good friends of the years, and I consider him a big influence and great player. I also used my 1957 Strat on a couple tracks, and for acoustic work my trusty Martin D-28. Amp wise I used a 1973 Marshall 50 Watt head through an early 70's 4x12 Cab and an early 60's brown fender Deluxe. Between David Barrick, Rodney Mills, and tone advice from my friend the Rev. Billy F Gibbons.
As we prepare to leave out tonight for Arizona, I'm packing plenty of Allman Brothers,
Cream, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Jeff Beck Group, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, and BB King for the ride. I still think Leslie West's solo in 'Mississippi Queen' is one of the best country solos ever. Listen to the solo on 'Walk Softly' from our first CD 'Pickin' On Nashville'.....now you know the rest of the story. More thoughts on guitars & music from the road.....
God bless...

Working for Warner Bros. Records for 27 years, I was very fortunate to receive many Awards, as well as
Gold and Platinum Albums for my work there. This one was a surprise for me tho. I had made friends with Greg and the band during some of Travis' tour dates when they shared the stage. The Band knew I worked hard for them as well, and when this came to me, I was thrilled as well as surprised. Its one of my all time favorites, both the Platinum Album Award and the Album itself.
